The challenge of choosing the right membrane

The filtration membrane is integral to the functionality of the devices you manufacture. Your selection of the right membrane material ensures that your products meet your high standards. For industrial filtration and purification, membranes also influence the quality of final products as well as process efficiency and sustainability targets. Medical membranes, on the other hand, must fulfill the clinical purpose of your device while safeguarding the integrity of the patient's circulatory system. In all these industrial and medical applications, there is no margin for error. Your membrane choice is crucial.

Medical membranes

Every year, your products – powered by the membranes they use – touch millions of people at critical moments in their lives. Our membranes are designed to mimic the function of natural membranes, to oxygenate or purify blood, save lives, and protect health.

Blood oxygenation: When patients face serious respiratory conditions, an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system can maintain blood oxygenation. Our specially designed gas permeable, hydrophobic capillary membranes for ECMOs effectively oxygenate the blood and enable carbon dioxide to diffuse out, while preserving the performance of the device by preventing blood plasma and water from transitioning to the gas side.

Haemodialysis: Impaired kidney function can be managed with haemodialysis, where capillary membranes fill the filtration role of the kidney. The portfolio of capillary membranes for dialysis from Solventum feature synthetic, hydrophilic polymer materials with a variety of properties for individual patient needs. Build your dialysers with the proven biocompatibility, performance and reliability of our capillary membranes.

Therapeutic apheresis: In haemapheresis, therapeutic apheresis is a gentle and highly effective procedure designed to remove harmful substances, typically metabolic products, from the blood. The first step separates plasma, including harmful substances, from the rest of the patient's blood. The plasma can then be discarded and replaced by healthy donor plasma, or harmful substances can be eliminated in a subsequent process.

Your choice of membranes is of the utmost importance for the performance of your devices. Our capillary membranes for therapeutic apheresis are meticulously crafted using synthetic polymers to ensure the efficient removal of harmful components from the blood or plasma.

Industrial membranes

Diverse industries have a common underlying concern: The need for filtration and purification equipment that relies on membrane filter technology. Our industrial membranes are at the heart of innovative equipment for pharmaceutical manufacturing, biopharma processing, microelectronics design, food and beverage production and more.

Each application begins with specific needs regarding pore size, flow rates, membrane materials and scalability. In addition, each industry has unique goals for efficiency and sustainability, as well as specific regulatory requirements. Water usage, recycling and wastewater management are key concerns.

Our wide range of industrial membranes is characterised by high performance so you can deliver the advanced technology that keeps industry moving.

Sterile filtration and microbial control: One of the primary applications of industrial membranes is to ensure the safety and purity of products by effectively removing bacteria and other microorganisms in microbial control processes. Sterile processes are especially critical in pharmaceutical manufacturing, bioprocessing and food and beverage production, where the end products are intended for human consumption and are subject to stringent regulatory standards. Solventum membranes are known the world over for reliable industrial sterile filtration.

Effluent treatment processes: By acting as selective barriers, properly designed industrial membranes facilitate the separation and removal of contaminants, suspended solids, and pollutants from fluid streams. The impurities and contaminants that fluid takes on when used in manufacturing processes make it unfit for reuse and harmful for disposal. Importantly, industrial wastewater management is a societal and regulatory concern. Our membranes in your filtration and wastewater applications help safeguard the environment, promoting sustainable and compliant water management policies across diverse industries, including microelectronics, food and beverage production, biopharma processing, and other industrial water uses.
