As fall arrives, the leaves on the trees begin to change color, pumpkin spice aroma fills the air, and spooky decorations adorn the shopping aisles. However, in the medical coding world there is one tell-tale sign that fall is here – the October release of the ICD-10-CM coding updates.

Every year on April 1 and October 1, ICD-10-CM coding changes take effect. For fiscal year (FY) 2024, the October update will bring:

  • 395 new diagnosis codes
  • 25 deletions of existing codes
  • 22 code revisions
  • 131 new headers
  • Four revised headers

Other updates will include changes to code first instructions, Excludes 1 and Excludes 2 notes, laterality, and use additional code directions. Almost every chapter will have an update, so reviewing the chapter notes and section notes is highly recommended.
